Principles
What every publication on the network holds to, and what you are free to do with what you find here.
Free to read, free to reuse
The publications are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). You may copy the text, translate it, print it, teach with it, and use it in your own work, including commercial work. In return, credit the publication by name, link to the page, and say if you changed anything.
Where a page builds on a source that asks for more, such as Wikipedia’s share-alike licence, the page says so and that licence applies to it. Photographs carry their own credits and licences beside them.
Sources in plain sight
A page that states a fact shows where the fact comes from. Each publication keeps a block on its pages naming the works it drew on and the people who wrote them, with links. We do not copy a source’s wording: pages are checked for runs of borrowed phrasing before they publish, and rewritten if they fail.
Honest about AI
These publications are written and kept up to date with AI. That is what lets a small team cover a thousand festivals or several hundred peoples, and keep them current. It is also a reason to be careful, so the rules are fixed:
- AI writes only from named sources it is given. It is not asked what it remembers.
- A page publishes on its own only when it passes checks for sources, originality and completeness. Otherwise a person reviews it.
- Every publication says, on the site, that it is made this way.
- When a reader shows us an error, we correct the page and the cause.
For humans and AI agents alike
More and more reading is done by AI agents on a person’s behalf. The publications are built for both: plain pages for people, and llms.txt files, structured data and MCP servers for agents, all under the same licence. How agents can use the network.
Advertising that pays its way honestly
Advertising funds the network, so nothing here is behind a paywall. Ads are labelled, kept apart from the writing, and never decide what is written. ClearTrust screens the traffic on every page, so advertisers pay for people. More on that.
A test for what belongs
A publication joins the network if a reader finishes a page knowing something true they did not know before, and could pass it on. Subjects are chosen for that, not for what earns most per page.
If we get something wrong
Tell us through the contact form, with the page address. Corrections are made on the page.
